Upright monument markers
One of the few cemetery grave marker options include the vertical monument. Vertical monument presents a bold statement when entering a cemetery. It stands out above all other flat or slant types of markers. Its majestic size and height include traditional blacks and grey colors with large engraved epitaphs, statements or sayings from the persons life long history. Beautiful colored or black and white cameos fired in porcelain can be placed in the front or rear of the tablet. Regally mounted on a large granite base these monuments stand out among the field of other markers.
The vertical monument consists of a base and a tablet that is pinned and glued to prevent movement or toppling over after installation.
Bases come in many sizes today and will be determined by your cemetery. Usually; you are given several options depending on whether you are using the monument to mark two adjacent graves or one single gravesite. Bases are typically 6-8” thick granite and can be polished on all 5 sides or rock pitched. Rock pitch texture simulates a pronounced tooled chipped surface and adds a timely aged look. The length of the base is going to be set by your cemetery depending on your grave site that you purchased. Once this is determined then the tablet will be selected in accordance with your cemetery regulations.
All monument bases due to their weights should be set on a concrete foundation. This foundation will help in preventing shifting or tilting after heavy rainstorms or heavy ground watering. This is to be worked out with your cemetery office.
The tablet is the most important part of the design and statement that the family wishes to make. Tablets came in may new designs. China is the leading manufacturer in exquisite designs that is carved out of solid granite such as Angels, Hearts, animals and flowers. Today these designs will require very long shipping lead times and may affect installation costs due to the handling of these very heavy tablets and bases.

Typical tablets will be Horizontal in design and their dimensions will be set by your cemetery. After determining the width and height requirements the design of the tablet will be matched with your manufacturers inventory on hand. Choosing a size that is in stock will reduce the special-order lead times or waiting period for a foreign supplier to ship to the manufacturer.
Tablets available readily are very common with the Serp or a curved profile for the tops and straight cut sides. Most single tablets are vertically taller than they are wide. This allows a better viewing area with writing and the placement of photos. Vertical monuments can be engraved on the front face as well as the rear face. Both faces are generally polished which makes engraving easily done.

Costs are generally related to the size of the tablet and base combination. The color of granite, black and greys are the most typical colors selected by customers and the best priced. This process should always begin by talking with your cemetery representative to determine your size restrictions. Always review your installation costs along with your foundation cost if one is required.
We at American Headstones Company will always quote the manufacturing and delivery cost to your cemetery. Installations are generally done by the cemetery according to their specifications.
